We present a Classical Translation of Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar’s Classical Shayari “लगता नहीं है जी मेरा उजड़े दयार में…”  Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar had composed this very soulful immortal ghazal, when he was imprisoned in Burma, away from his motherland, where he eventually died.

In Capt. Pravin Raghuvansi ji  wordsI always had a great desire to do an English paraphrasing of it, while retaining its spirit and emotions… ”

We extend our heartiest thanks to the learned author Captain Pravin Raghuvanshi Ji (who is very well conversant with Hindi, Sanskrit,  English and Urdu languages) for this classical translation.

☆ I don’t  feel  inspirited at all in this desolated abode …. ☆

(Captain Pravin Raghuvanshi: Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar had composed a very soulful immortal ghazal, when he was imprisoned in Burma, away from his motherland, where he eventually died:  “Lagta nahi hai jee mera ujde dayar mei…”

I always had a great desire to do an English paraphrasing of it, while retaining its spirit and emotions… Here’s an attempt…

I don’t  feel  inspirited at all

in this desolated abode, but

Whose happiness has  ever

lasted in this transient world

Nightingale has no complaint

With the  gardener or fowler

When  destiny  itself scripted

its captivity in peak of spring

Was  granted  four  days

of  life  as  a  benefaction…

Two were spent in desires,

while remaining two in wait

Please  tell  these desires to

settle down somewhere else

There isn’t enough room left

in this overly blotched heart

How  much  unfortunate,  I,

Zafar*  is, who couldn’t  find

Two yards of land for  burial

In the street of dear homeland!

*Zafar – India’s last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah, also known as Zafar, died in a British prison in Burma, longing for his country….

☆ Alien

Masked herd

Kept tearing off

my face,

In the delusion of

second, third, fourth

under layers

Nipping off flesh Membrane-by-membrane,

layer-by-layer…

I kept on writhing in pain,

Kept crying, Kept sobbing

in excruciating pain,

But, the herd remained unmoved

All of a sudden

fear began to appear

on their faces…

They started to run away from me

Declaring me to be

an alien,

Herd believed,

Mask less face

doesn’t even exist

on the earth..!

❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃

The  whole  life passes on

Like a weighing scale, dear

Sometimes duty is heavier

Other times heart’s desires

❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃

What a big dilemma I am in,

Have a little mercy, O’ God!

Either don’t make me dream,

Or just realise them for me!

❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃

It takes some time to

 forget the memories…

It  takes a  while  to

make the eyes sleep…

It’s not so easy

to forget someone

It  takes some time

to convince the heart…

Daily …. ✍️

How does your pen

keep moving…

How d’you manage

to create everyday?

Being stranger

to myself I keep

asking for my

address everyday…

Keep introspecting

myself deep inside

As I peep into the

mirror everyday…

And, the pen just

oozes ink on paper

everyday looking

at my own image…

Water rolling down the cheeks

is  not  always  the tears…

These  are  the words which

aren’t destined to be on paper

❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃

Happened to see you

after a long time, today

hope the day doesn’t pass

away in this thought only

❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃

Keeps longing for her glimpse,

Keeps  wriggling  in  her wait

What  to  say  of my wretched

heart  that  beats  for  others…

❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃

Remembered after the death

All my life kept staying

In  a  stranger’s  house

Even while not traveling

I remained in journey only

That was just my body which

Kept wandering everywhere,

But my heart always kept

Following  your footsteps…

❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃ ❃

Your love has made

Me utterly nameless,

It  deprived  me  of

every possible pleasure

I had never desired

To ever fall in love, but

Your very glance itself

Got  me  auctioned …

☆ How much of a God will you remain…? ☆

You are the father

O’ God…!,

But you haven’t bequeathed any will to your son,

Still you’re my father…

O’ my beloved God…!

On pure golden earrings

of wheat,

Every year you shower the

mercury droplets

of rains

But you never endure

my sufferings,

Still you’re my father

O’ my  loving God…!

At the time of harvest

You keep pouring infernos

from the sky

So that cloudbursts

befall on us

But you tie fetters

to my feet

Worsening my

poverty stricken state

Still you  remain my father

O’ my  dear God…!

When the unquenchable

thirst of paddy longs for water

I toil day and night

with dogged perseverance

I keep my fists

clenched patiently

But you open them forcibly

with the iron rod of famine

Still you’re my father

My only God…!

Again, You render my hard work futile

Like in the quagmire of swamp

You never give

an alm of droplet

neverthless you remain my father

My  loving God…!

What if I stop believing in you,

If I disown you

And seeing me do this

Others start following me

Just think

How much of father

How much of  a God

will you  remain…!

 ☆ I’m Like A Little Sparrow Myself… ☆

The age-old, long forgotten

relations of my village,

whom I’d buried myself

with the dust of neglect

I desperately search for

them in this big city,

with a lost identity…

In the mercury light,

with its insensitive limits

I keep seeking the

sheets of moonlight

of my rustic village…

In this town’s

blown-out bonfire

I do keep seeking

hot embers…

In the crowded

surge of humanity

I keep seeing only

the unfamiliar faces…

Among the stylish

gammers of this city

I keep searching for

my adorable

mother’s wrinkled face…

In midst of ever ceaseless,

fast-paced life of the city

I keep longing for the cool

shadow of my neem tree…

In this city, replete with

overflowing knowledge,

I do recognize the

unschooled characters

of my village

strewn across all-over…

In the bunch of damsels,

jiving rhythmically

at the glitzy floor

of swimming pools,

I envision the ducks

of rustic ponds…

Clutched in the

golden eagle’s talons

I see myself as a

hapless little sparrow…

But then,

when did sky ever

give shelter to the birds…

At this terminal stage of life

It’s the time for me to

nostalgically embrace

my own land…!

Some arrogance, too,  is

Necessary to live, if you

bend too much to meet

Then  the  world makes

your back a footmat only…

Agreed I’m your riddle only…

But I’m your solution too…

Though I am  bit crazy

But a large-hearted one!

What will you do now

By coming close to me…

You’ve lost me for good

By trying again and again
