English Literature – Book-Review/Abstract – In the Flickering of an Eye – Ms. Neelam Saxena Chandra

In the Flickering of an Eye

A novel written by Ms. Neelam Saxena Chandra by LiFi Publications

Twenty five years worth of ‘what ifs’ and ‘if onlys’ have haunted and tortured Vinay. He cannot help but go back in time again and again to that one moment that changed his life forever. A chance encounter with a person from his past, and a journey through the majestic hills of Kalimpong lead him to some of his answers, in the form of an elusive woman, who bears a striking resemblance to the woman he loved and lost. Will he finally get his happily-ever-after? Or will his story, tarnished when he was nineteen by the gotra system, forever be punctuated with too many full stops?

Milind Uikey, Film Director Bollywood – This novel opens up the complexities of a novel writing through intricate inner world of writer himself.

Major Mohammed Ali Shah, Actor Bollywood – A very well narrated tale, engrossing from the beginning to the end

I. Puri, Art Writer, Curator & Documentarian – This novel is a beautifully imagined work, the story of a young couple in India today standing up to fight against caste prejudice.

Excerpts from the book – In the Flickering of an Eye

Both of them got down from the car. Vinay took his trolley bag and began moving in the direction of the station. Taking the bag in his hand, Anuj said, “If you don’t mind let me leave you till the train.”

Vinay objected vehemently at first. He did not like anyone helping him. However, Anuj’s words melted him. He said, “Would you have said no if I was your own son?”

Both of them walked silently. The train was stationed already at the platform. Anuj kept Vinay’s luggage below his berth, touched his feet and was about to leave when Vinay suddenly muttered, “Vinu did not die, Anuj. Neither did Manju.”

Anuj looked at him questioningly. However, Vinay was quiet as before. The engine whistled. Train began moving at slow speed. Anuj looked at Vinay again as if to ensure that what he had heard was indeed correct. However, Vinay had begun looking outside. Anuj quietly got down from the train.

A selected poem from “Winter shall fade ….”

DREAMS

I embrace my dreams

Just like the moon

Embraces the moonlight

Or the veil of night

Embraces the stars.

I fall in love with them

Little by little

And they come to me

Bit by bit

Kissing me

Hugging me

Skimming me,

As if drizzling upon me

And covering me with affection,

Percolating like fragrance

All over my being

And singing

Some happy numbers.

Keep dreaming

For

The relationship

Between dreams and self

Is the most fulfilling…
